Fireworks show will ring in new year in Johnstown

December 13, 2012
By LEVI PASCHER , The Leader Herald

JOHNSTOWN - Local residents won't have to venture far on New Year's Eve for an exhilarating celebration.

The Johnstown Area Community Center says it will present a Dec. 31 downtown fireworks display.

"We decided to sponsor this to give back to the city for the support they have given us for the past 10 years," said Dick Luck, a JACC board member.

Luck said the fireworks display will be launched from the park on West Main Street at 9 p.m.

He said the JACC has paid approximately $1,800 to have the Alfonso Fireworks Co. put on about a 20- minute display.

"We had some extra funds and just wanted to give back to the community," Luck said. "This is the first time the community center has tried something like this."

If you go ...

New Year's Eve fireworks will take place Dec. 31.

Time: 9 p.m.

Place: Fireworks will be launched from the downtown park on West Main Street. People will watch from across the street.

He said the idea came up at a board meeting in October.

The city code enforcer and the mayor approved the plan in November, he said.

Luck said there will be no vendors at the event because the space is limited in the park because of safety precautions.

He said people will be required to stand on the opposite side of Main Street to view the display.

He said the area will be properly fenced off.

The Fire Department has agreed to have a truck at the site at the event for safety, Luck said.

Mayor Sarah Slingerland this morning was happy about the fireworks show.

"We are very grateful to the JCC for sponsoring this event, and it will be a great way to start the new year in downtown," Slingerland said.

Slingerland said this is the first fireworks display in the city since the city's 250th celebration, which took place in 2008.
