Gerard Francis Koller, 78, of Lincoln Avenue, Amsterdam, N.Y., passed away suddenly on November 22, 2012, at home following a recent illness.
He was a son of the late Gerard G. and Cecilia Barry Koller.
Jerry served during the Korean Conflict from 1950 to 1953 as a code operator in Alaska and received the National Defense Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
A graduate of Albany Business College, Jerry was employed by the New York State Tax Department as a tax auditor in Amsterdam, Gloversville and Johnstown, which he left in 1964 to start Amsterdam Tax Service.
Jerry was a 53-year member and was current Adjutant and Past Commander of the James T. Bergen Post #39 American Legion and Past Commander of Montgomery County American Legion. He served as the Director of the Montgomery County Korean War Veterans and coordinated the yearly Remembrance Day Ceremony held on the Anniversary of the Korean War Cease Fire on July 27, which was held at the Montgomery County Korean War Veterans Memorial in Fonda, N.Y.
Jerry also was a current member of VFW Post #9253 in Fonda, of the National Korean War Veterans Association, Inc., the Mohawk Valley Representative to the Empire State Passenger Association Board, Reid Hill Fish & Game Club and the Bigelow Weavers Association.
Jerry enjoyed hiking the Adirondack high peaks, having climbed Mt. Marcy 20 times with his dogs Puffy and Camper. Prior to his death, Jerry created, wrote and illustrated a children's coloring book about Adirondack Red and Puffy called "Keep The Adirondacks Clean," from a patch of the same name, he designed.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Mary C. DuCharme Koller, to whom he was married on November 27, 1965, one sister, Rosemary NuttingSnyder (David), two brothers, Dennis and Kenneth Koller all of Amsterdam, his brothers and sister in law, Joseph and Nancy DuCharme of Burnt Hills, N.Y. Stanley DuCharme of Florida, Patricia DuCharme O'Connor (Richard), aunt and uncle, Rosanne and Michael Liscovitz of N.J.; nieces and nephews, Kristopher Nutting of Niskayuna, N.Y., Elizabeth Edwards (Richard) of Latham, N.Y., Amy (Kevin) Gregory of Oneonta, N.Y., David (Corinna) DuCharme of Scotia, N.Y., Dorothy (Bill) Schwefel of New Jersey, Kathleen Persons of Niskayuna, N.Y., Cherylanne DuCharme of Schenectady, Denise Johnson of Altamont, N.Y. and Ronald and Stanley DuCharme, both of Glenville, N.Y. Several grandnieces and nephews and cousins also survive.
Funeral services were held on Monday morning November 26, 2012 at St. Mary's Church in Amsterdam, N.Y.
Interment was at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Fort Johnson, N.Y.
