Renovations under way in Fonda

FONDA - The Village Hall is being renovated tp provide a bigger meeting room and make other improvements, Mayor William Peeler said.

Peeler, who took office in April, said the renovation plan was started by former Mayor Kim Flander, who did not seek re-election.

"The renovation, planned and budgeted for before I arrived, [is] to enlarge the current meeting room for the village facility," Peeler said. "The previous administration had set aside $30,000 to remove a wall and conjoin two rooms."

JoAnn Downings, village clerk, said the $30,000 had come from leftover funds from a previous budget year.

However, Peeler said, there was other work to be done in the building, with its electrical wiring and heating system being inefficient or outdated. The boiler system, described as only 50 percent efficient, will be repaired.

New wiring will be installed, along with Internet-connection capabilities and workspaces for the employees. All the offices have been insulated as well.

Work began on the project in late July, with the village clerk's office occupying a temporary space in a half-finished room. On Thursday, the rest of the building sat in the same state, with the meeting room sporting new walls but no finished floor or ceiling. Cans of paint and tools filled a new office, while the former front desk was filled with bits of wood, paint and other materials.

"The building itself is very sound with some exceptions to mortar repairs needed. We need to preserve the structure for years to come so we do not create additional cost of replacement or more extensive repairs later on," Peeler said.

Peeler said with estimates of the expense of building new local municipal structures running to millions of dollars, the investment of $30,000 was a good move.
