Joyce Ann Van Avery of Perth, N.Y., died on Tuesday, November 13, 2012, in her home at age 90 after a prolonged illness.
She was born on August 6, 1922, in Cleveland, Ohio to John and Armenia (Leeds) Clark, both deceased. She is survived by her loving husband of 67 1/2 years, Dr. Jasper Van Avery; a daughter, Dr. Janet Van Avery of Pattersonville, N.Y.; a son, John Van Avery of Roebling, N.J.; three grandchildren, Rachel, Nicole and John Robert Van Avery, all of North Brunswick, N.J.; and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Van Avery attended numerous grade schools, high school in Mount Holly, N.J. and The King's College when it was located in New Castle, Delaware. Except for employment for a few years in the late 1940s, she devoted her life to being a wife and mother to her immediate family and sharing activities with her many friends. Joyce also served on the Board of Directors of the Middlesex General Hospital (now the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital), New Brunswick, N.J. during two tours as President of the Hospital Auxiliary and ran the Hospital Gift Shop for several years.
Accepting Jesus Christ as her Saviour in the 1930s during the ministry of the late Billie Sunday, she was a lifelong member of the Baptist Church. Most recently, she was a member of the Congregation of the Adirondack Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted by her nephew, Larry Alkinburgh at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 17, at Adirondack Baptist Church, 1431 State Highway 29, Gloversville.
Visitation for friends and family will be on Friday, November 16, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Adirondack Baptist Church.
Interment will be in Fort Plain Cemetery immediately following the funeral service.
A reception will be held at the church following the interment.
Although her presence will be greatly missed by her family and numerous friends, they are greatly comforted by the knowledge that she is now in heaven. Donations to Mountain Valley Hospice, 108 Steele Avenue, Gloversville, NY 12078 will be appreciated.
