Fulton County supervisors eye filling of two positions

JOHNSTOWN - Fulton County supervisors last week took initial action to fill vacant positions at the county Sheriff's Department and the Board of Supervisors' Office.

The Board of Supervisors' Finance Committee approved filling the vacancies, which will now be considered for final approval by the full board Tuesday.

Sheriff Thomas J. Lorey requested filling a vacancy due to a leave of absence for three months.

"I have an investigator who is out on disability," the sheriff said. "He wants an unpaid leave of absence."

Lorey requested to backfill the investigator's position with a temporary deputy until the leave is completed

Johnstown 4th Ward Supervisor William Waldron said it was his understanding the sheriff's department has had problems finding temporary deputies, but Lorey said he had one available.

Fact Box

Fulton County government is looking to fill two positions:

An investigator in the Sheriff's Department,

A legislative aide in Board of Supervisors office.

In another vacancy review to come before the committee, county Administrative Officer Jon Stead requested and received permission from the committee to fill his office's legislative aide position, vacant since a retirement in July. Former Deputy Clerk of the Board Sally Kettler retired in July from the Board of Supervisors office at the County Office Building.

Stead said he is evaluating the workload and limited coverage within the office. If the vacancy is approved to be filled, he said, he intends to promote someone within the office and leave a secretary to the board chairman position vacant until final determination can be made on final staffing levels during 2013.

He said a majority of the work tasks currently carried out by staff relate to the job duties of the legislative aide.

The committee heard the legislative aide salary pays $36,270 annually, with the total cost being $54,767 with benefits. The secretary to the chairman post pays $33,379 and $50,251 with benefits.
