Albert J. Melita, age 78, of Johnstown, passed away on Saturday, November 3, 2012, at the Nathan Littauer Hospital, Gloversville.
He was born on January 22, 1934, in Johnstown, a son of the late Salvatore Melita and Carmelia Precopia Melita. Albert attended Fulton-Montgomery Community College and received his associate degree in accounting. Mr. Melita honorably served his country during the Korean War in the U.S. Navy. He worked for many years in law enforcement as a sheriff for Los Angeles County.
Albert was a devout Catholic and a longtime communicant and choir singer at Holy Trinity Church in Johnstown. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Supreme Council, Johnstown.
Mr. Melita is survived by his wife, Rosanne Ferrara Melita, whom he married on December 28, 1968; one son, Albert J. Melita Jr. and his wife, Amy of Rochester; one sister, Minnie Johnson of Johnstown; three grandchildren, Sam Melita, Emily Melita and Andrew Melita; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by one son, Dominic Melita, who passed in 1997; three brothers Joseph Melita, Anthony Melita and Salvatore Melita; and one sister, Nina Coadeny.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, November 6, at Holy Trinity Church, Glebe Street, Johnstown. Family and friends may call today, November 5, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Barter & Donnan Funeral Home, 1 N. Melcher St., Johnstown.
Interment will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery, Johnstown with military honors.
