Fonda-Johnstown places fifth at Division II swim meet

CLIFTON PARK - The Fonda-Johnstown girls swim team finished fifth Saturday at the Section II Division II Championships at Shenendehowa High School.

Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake defended its Division II team title, finishing with 397 points. Queensbury finished second with 291 points, while Albany Academy was third with 269 points. Fonda-Johnstown (212 points) was fifth, Gloversville-Mayfield (198) was sixth and Amsterdam (49) was ninth.

"I am so proud of how well every member of this team performed this weekend," Fonda-Johnstown coach Julianna Popp said. "Everyone put forth their best effort."

Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake won six of the 12 events in Saturday's final.

Sara Swett (200-yard freestyle, 500 freestyle) won two events for Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake, while Christy Brown (50 freestyle) also posted a win.

Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake also won the 200 freestyle, 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays.

Fonda-Johnstown had two competitors qualify for the state championship meet, which is secheduled for Nov. 16 and 17 at Ithaca College.

Meghan Bartlett (1-meter diving) and Erica Askew (100 breaststroke) both posted wins for Fo-Jo and earned state meet spots in the process.

Bartlett won her fourth straight Section II Division II diving title Thursday by a 75.45 margin over runner-up Lauren Katz of Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake.

Askew earned her spot by winning the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:08.72 on Saturday by 5.28 seconds over Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake's Meghan Pettit.

"I am very pleased with Erica Askew making states. It was her goal from the beginning of the season and she has put in the hard work and dedication it takes to compete at that level," Popp said. "It is also nice to have two representatives from the Fo-Jo team going to states with Meghan [Bartlett] already qualified and Erica making it today."

Askew also placed third in the 100 freestyle, while Bartlett was sixth in the 50 freestyle.

Cecelia Mowrey was fourth in the 500 freestyle for Fonda-Johnstown and seventh in the 200 freestyle.

Hannah Palsgraf was sixth in the 200 individual medley and 11th in the 100 butterfly for Fonda-Johnstown, while Erica Wagner was 13th in the 200 individual medley and 14th in the 100 butterfly.

Emily Miles added a 14th-place finish in the 100 breaststroke for Fo-Jo and a 16th-place effort in the 200 freestyle.

The team of Palsgraf, Askew, Mowrey and Bartlett was second in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:59.25. Askew, Palsgraf, Wagner and Bartlett posted a time of 1:47.44 to place fifth in the 200 freestyle relay, while Wagner, Miles, Mowrey and Samantha Sweet placed seventh in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 4:18.97.

"Our underclassmen were excellent contributors," Popp said. "We look forward to what the future holds for Fo-Jo."

For Gloversville-Mayfield, Mary-Kate Poulin placed fifth in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:03.14. Poulin also was seventh in the 100 backstroke with a time 1:03.27.

Desiree Ives was seventh in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:58.74 and 14th in the 100 backstroke.

In the 50 freestyle, Sara Curtis was ninth for Gloversville-Mayfield and Sam Stewart was 11th. Stewart also placed 12th in the 100 butterfly, while Curtis was 11th in the 100 freestyle.

Carolyn Peck was 10th in the 100 butterfly and 12th in the 500 freestyle for the Lady Sea Dragons, while Alex Blanchard was ninth in the 100 breaststroke.

Jenna Cordone placed 13th in the 200 freestyle for Gloversville-Mayfield and 10th in the 500 freestyle, while Jordan Capobianco was 15th in the 100 butterfly for the Lady Sea Dragons.

Kylie Cotugno placed 12th in the 200 individual medley and fifth in the 100 breaststroke for Gloversville-Mayfield.

The team of Ives, Cotugno, Peck and Alex Blanchard placed fifth in the 200 medley relay for Gloversville-Mayfield.

The team of Poulin, Ives, Stewart and Curtis placed seventh in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:48.25, while Poulin, Peck, Stewart and Curtis teamed up to place sixth in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 4:02.02.

Justine Youngs placed 16th in the 200 individual medley for Amsterdam, while Kayla Dzikowicz was 15th in the 100 breaststroke.

The team of Ashley Adair, Paige Bertuch, Cloe Reynicke and Mianna Conti placed 10th in the 200 medley relay for Amsterdam with a time of 2:40.91.

Adair, Conti, Marissa Farina and Amea Hammonds placed 10th in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 2:14.96.

The team of Gulianna Pritchard, Mary Wozniak, Youngs and Dzikowicz placed ninth in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 2:21.74.
