Cheers and jeers

November 3, 2012
The Leader Herald

CHEERS - To giving back. It can be called "paying it forward," "giving back" or "doing unto others," but the concern shown when people take action to help others is the truest form of compassion. Friday, five volunteer members of the Schoharie Volunteer Fire Department left for areas in Nassau County - a county, among others on the East Coast, devastated by the recent storm. These men are responding to a need in the same manner people from Nassau County - strangers to Schoharie County - did when they came to help after Tropical Storm Irene a year ago. The Schoharie firefighters will bring their experience and abilities along with their hearts filled with empathy. We know they will be welcomed and appreciated.

CHEERS - To preparedness. In our area this week, our county and local agencies prepared us for the possibility of a major storm. The job by the Montgomery County Emergency Management Team, sheriff's departments, local elected officials and those monitoring river and dam levels was done proactively. We were fortunate, this time. Some may feel there is too much hype and drama regarding forecasting storms, and there are those who actually feel a sense of disappointment when we dodge a bullet. In the event of an emergency, we all need to be reminded of necessary precautions, and we all need to take responsibility for our own safety.

CHEERS - To letters. In the past two weeks, The Leader-Herald has published more than 80 letters to the editor. Writing letters to the editor is a good way to communicate information and viewpoints to the people of your community. The letters section is one of the most popular parts of a newspaper, especially a local paper, because it presents the views of the average reader and gives the public a forum to express opinions and concerns. The election-related letters are important, but so are letters about foster homes for pets or a charity's successful event. These letters are the words and opinions of your neighbors. May we always have the freedom to express our opinions.
