Fonda issues state of emergency

FONDA - In light of the possible local effects from Hurricane Sandy, the village of Fonda has declared a state of emergency effective Monday at 10 a.m.

According to a news release:

All public parks will be closed effective 10 a.m.

All non-essential village personnel will be sent home at 3 p.m. and all village buildings and properties will be closed to the public.

Beginning at 4 p.m., all people within the village should begin returning to their homes and complete all business necessary.

At 8 p.m., restrictions will be placed on vehicular traffic wherein only commercial supply trucks and emergency vehicles will be allowed travel on roadways, along with essential medical personnel and first responders.

A curfew of 10 p.m. Monday until 8 a.m. Tuesday will be enforced. No pedestrians should be on any public street or roadways. This curfew may be extended should situations require.

Grocery and convenience businesses will be allowed to remain open during this event. All other non-essential businesses should prepare for closure at 4 p.m. until released for opening.

Should evacuation be necessary and announced, village residents may seek shelter at the Fonda-Fultonville Central School, where Red Cross personnel will be available to assist. Bring only essential clothing and medications with you, along with identification, the news release said.

The village will be seeking volunteers for assisting neighbors and the village personnel in filling sand bags and storm preparations should it be necessary. If you want to volunteer, call 853-4335.

All emergencies should be called in to the Montgomery County Emergency Center by dialing 911.
