As a proud Johnstown High School alumnus (Class of '66), I must agree with Jack Papa's letter. The discussion on football on Facebook is nearing 200 posts, many from alumni no longer residing in the Fulton County area.
The area in which I currently reside is a "hot spot" for high school football. It is not unusual for a local team to end the season with a state championship.
While the football program may not have achieved those lofty goals, it was, for many years, a well respected force with more than a few undefeated seasons and many more seasons with only one or two losses. There also were a few losing seasons, but the program always came back. Recent correspondence with fellow classmates has revealed many are saddened and ashamed that this once great program has been allowed to practically disintegrate.
As Mr. Papa stated, serious discussions need to take place with parents, coaches, students and maybe even some local alumni from some of those winning teams there for support.
Wouldn't it be great for both Johnstown and Gloversville to have a real renewal of that rivalry with a great season ending game of hard fought football, where the outcome could go either way, with a standing-room-only crowd of local support?
Let's give the children a chance at that.
