AMSTERDAM-In a move that will give the Democratic Party the majority on the city's Common Council, 1st Ward Alderman Joe Isabel announced Saturday he will change his affiliation from Republican to Democrat.
Isabel, who was elected to the council as a Republican, said he feels the Republican Party has shifted away from its core values.
"I have made the difficult decision to switch my political party registration from Republican to Democrat," Isabel said in a news release. "While my views on how to move the city forward have not changed, I feel that the party has."
"Joe is a dedicated and conscientious public servant, and he wants to move the city forward," Jeff Stark, the city's Democratic Party chairman, said in the release. "He will make a good fit in our party, and I'm glad to have him on board."
"I'm happy to welcome Joe to our ranks," Bethany Schumann-McGhee, the Democratic Party's Montgomery County chairwoman, said in the release. "His perspective from many years of public service will be an asset to us."
Isabel's registration will be effective after the Nov. 6 elections.
