GLOVERSVILLE - With the third seed from the Class A Northwest division on the line for the upcoming sectionals, the Queensbury Spartans stepped up their game against Gloversville.

The Spartans' defense held the Huskies to a three-and-out on their opening possession and backed it up with a four-play, 62-yard drive capped off by a 49-yard touchdown romp by Evan Myers.

The Spartans' defense came up big, recovering a Gloversville fumble that Philip Wettersten returned for a touchdown to help set the Huskies back 14-0 just more than 4:30 from the opening kickoff.

Gloversville could not recover from the early setbacks and Queensbury secured the third seed with a 46-14 victory over the Huskies Friday night at Robert E. Gould Stadium at Husky Field.

"The guys fought all game long but we didn't do some things we wanted to do and got ourselves in a hole early," Gloversville coach Jared Bongo said. "We didn't execute and when that happens against a good team like this, you are going to get beat."

Gloversville did get one of the first-quarter scores back when the Spartans attempted an onside kick that the Huskies Hunter Goodwin recovered on the Gloversville 48.

Asa Barnhill converted a third-and-long into a first down with a 29-yard run, moving the Huskies to the Queenbury 21. Two plays later, Mike Murray raced around the right side on a 15-yard touchdown run and David Vandenabeele kicked the extra point to cut the Spartans lead in half, 14-7.

The Huskies' defense held the Spartans double wing offense to a series of short gains before Aston Moses broke a 24-yard run on the first play from scrimmage in the second period.

Aston followed up his 24-yard run with a 9-yard run to set up quarterback Aidan Switzer's 5-yard run into the end zone to build the Spartans lead to 2-07.

The Queensbury defense got the stop it needed on Gloversville's next possession and ground out an 11-play, 57-yard scoring drive that Myers capped off with a 5-yard touchdown run.

The Spartans again capitalized on a Gloversville three-and-out with a four play 36-yard drive that Wettersten finished off with a 6-yard touchdown run to help secure a 34-7 halftime lead for Queensbury.

The Spartans wasted no time extending their advantage as Kody Burn ran the second-half kick off back 76 yards for a touchdown and Kale Minot kicked the extra point to stake Queensbury to a 40-7 lead.

Gloversville cut the Spartans lead to 40-14 by recovering a fumble on the Spartans 26 and driving to the 13 where Barnhill connected with Mike Fancher in the end zone for the touchdown.

Gloversville threatened to put another score on the board in the fourth quarter.

The Huskies' Ben VanNostrand recovered a fumble on the Queensbury 38-yard line. Fancher broke off a 14-yard run that Murray followed with a 5-yard gain.

Vandenabeele ran the ball 13 yards to the Queensbury, 5-yard line before the Spartans Robert Fisher fell on a fumbled snap to give Queensbury possession on its own 6-yard line with 5:13 left to play.

Runs by Moses, Francis Nassivera and Burn set up a 62-yard touchdown run by Bryce Breault to lock up the 46-14 final score.

Myers led the Spartans' 308-yard rushing performance with 108 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries. Moses finished with 64 yards on nine carries, while Breault had 62 yards on one carry.

Barnhill led the Huskies with 72 yards rushing on 19 attempts and was 10-for-16 passing for 79 yards and a touchdown and as sacked five times. Fancher, who played with a broken right hand in a cast, ran for 19 yards on two carries and caught two passes for 27 yards and a touchdown. Vandenabeele added 46 yards rushing on three carries, while Murray had 32 yards on six carries. Defensively, David DelRio had seven tackles, while Murray had six and French had five.

It is anticipated that fourth-seeded Gloversville (2- 5 overall, 1-3 Class A Northwest) will open Class A sectional play next week on the road against top-seeded Troy.

"We are going to build on what we did right and fix what we did wrong," Bongo said. "Anything can happen in playoffs, it is a whole new season."
