AMSTERDAM - State police at Fonda said troopers charged Thomas J. Green, 28, of Amsterdam at 9 p.m. Sunday after he tried to steal merchandise from Walmart.
Green was charged with fourth-degree criminal mischief and petit larceny.
Police said Walmart employees spotted Green trying to leave the store with several pieces of merchandise. Green also attempted to force some of the merchandise through a fence before fleeing, police said.
Troopers identified Green and his vehicle on surveillance cameras before he turned himself in, police said.
Green was issued appearance tickets for Town Court on Oct. 23 at 6 p.m.
