PERTH - State police said a Gloversville man is in custody after being charged Tuesday with two felony counts of third-degree grand larceny.
Robert W. Pettit, 39, was charged after two incidents with separate car dealerships in August and September.
Troopers said the first incident occurred Aug. 15 when Pettit told a Fucillo's car salesman at the Nelliston dealership he was waiting to receive a payment from his insurance company that would pay $34,351 of the $36,919 price of the vehicle.
Troopers said Pettit provided the dealership with a check for the remaining sum signed by another person and left the dealership with the vehicle. The salesman began making calls, troopers said, and it became clear the check Pettit wrote was from a closed account.
In the second incident, troopers said, Pettit allegedly failed to return a 2009 Hummer H3 he borrowed from the Brown's Ford dealership in Perth on Sept. 7 to complete paperwork at the Department of Motor Vehicles.
The vehicle was located in Schenectady on Sept. 26 when the driver told Schenectady police officers Pettit loaned the vehicle to him for $60 per week, troopers said.
Pettit turned himself in at the State Police barracks in Mayfield on Tuesday and is being held in Fulton County Jail on $10,000 bail.
He is scheduled to appear in Town Court on Nov. 5.
