A crisis exists in this community, and indeed the nation. But it is best to talk about what is happening in the Fulton and Montgomery county area. The classifieds are filled with ads for free kittens and dogs. Our economy has caused our citizens to move out of their residences and leave their pets behind, abandoned like so much unwanted furniture. Unaltered pets are allowed to breed at will, compounding the problem.
There are many in our community that are well meaning and do their best to help these poor creatures, but many times they do not know where to turn and have limited funds. They turn for help from one of our many fine rescue organizations and humane societies only to find that they are full to overflowing.
As a volunteer with Gloversville Cat Sanctuaries and Information Center, I am aware of the situation through my contacts on Facebook and our association with other local groups. The story is the same with everyone. The shelters are full. Foster homes have more furry souls than we really should. Foster families live in fear of being labeled a hoarder because of the number of cats in their homes, no matter how clean and neat they keep them. But we cannot turn them down or let them go hungry or meet a worse fate because we care about what happens to them. If we don't, who will?
There are no easy answers to this crisis. Local shelters and rescue groups are doing their best, but they need the community's help. They not only need your donations, but we need your time. They desperately need volunteers in many areas including fostering, transportation, fundraising, assisting at adoption events and more.
Most of all, please spay and neuter your pets. We can help you with a low-cost spay/neuter if necessary.
Please help us to help you with your stray and owned pets. Together, we can make a difference.
