Joan D. Oare

Joan D. Oare, age 80, of Gloversville, N.Y., passed away Sunday, September 30, 2012, at the Nathan Littauer Hospital after a short illness. Born in Gloversville on October 31,1931, a daughter of the late George and Rose Compani Davis. She was a 1949 graduate of Gloversville High School and attended business school in Schenectady. Joan was employed by the Gloversville School District for 38 years, retiring in 1992. She was also the cheerleading coach for football and soccer and sang the Alma-Mater at the Gloversville basketball games. After her retirement from the school district, she became a receptionist for the Lexington Center for 20 years, retiring from there in 2012.

Joan was a member of the Church of the Holy Spirit of Gloversville. She was a member of the Gloversville Board of Education for eight years and the Gloversville Women's Alumni Club. She was inducted into the Gloversville Hall of Fame on April 28, 2007, to recognize and to honor those who have made a significant contribution to their community. She would organize her class of 1949 reunions every five years since she graduated. She loved and cared for her cats.

She is survived by two daughters, Kimberly A. Russo of Gloversville and Tracey M. Salvione of Gloversville; four sisters, Arlene Smith of Gloversville, Donna Oare of Palatine, Yvonne Fosmire of Mayfield and Patricia Ottusso of Pine Lake; three grandchildren, Kayla Russo, Jennifer Russo, and Ashleigh Dockstader; one aunt; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Joan was predeceased by her beloved husband, Kenny. They were married on July 10, 1954; he died December 30, 2005. Also predeceased by one daughter, Sheri Lee Oare.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, October 3, at the John W. Finocan Funeral Home Inc., 13 Prospect Ave., Gloversville. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Church of the Holy Spirit, Gloversville. Interment will take place at a later date in the Ferndale Cemetery, Johnstown, N.Y., Memorial contributions may be made to the Gloversville Women's Alumni Club GWAC, P.O. Box 1285, Gloversville, NY 12078 or the Brennan Humane Society, 437 Nine Mile Tree Rd., Gloversville, NY 12078.
