Parents, friends have affect on smoking

September 29, 2012
The Leader Herald

I am so sick of hearing about cigarette advertisements causing our youth to smoke.

Do you really think our kids see these ads and say to themselves, "I better start smoking now before they're $20 a pack"? They see their parents smoking or their friends are doing it.

It really hurts me to see a young person smoking. I smoked for many years. One of the hardest things I've ever done was quit. It's so easy to start smoking, thinking it's the "cool" thing to do. If they only knew how hard it is to quit.

You can't just tell a teenager not to do something because it's bad for you. Remember when we were teenagers? We were indestructible.

Parents set the tone. Expect your kids to smoke if you do. Love your children enough to quit. They also need to know their smoking breaks your heart.
