For more than 35 years, Fulton County volunteers through Church World Service have organized CROP Walks. The purpose of the walk is to raise funds to alleviate hunger around the world and at home. We can take pride in the efforts of these volunteers who are willing to ask family, friends and neighbors to part with hard-earned money; that takes courage. It's not something that I can do comfortably, but I have had the privilege of watching my husband, Jack, during his yearly CROP Walk efforts, enjoy the race of trying to raise more money than he did the year before.
I should note that CROP is not the only volunteer effort that our community sponsors to attempt to feed and ease the lives of the poor. There are local food pantries and meal programs. In addition to the funds sent to worldwide efforts, a portion of all money raised here through CROP will be used to support local food programs. We need all of these efforts because hunger is not a limited need that can be met once and then be forgotten.
I encourage you to support CROP Walk this year by contributing and/or walking Sept. 30. People who are interested in becoming a part of this year's effort can call Grace Lutheran Church at 762-7924 or Bobbi Nigro, chairperson, at 725-6781. If you really want to talk at length about CROP, call Jack at 762-4977. He will love talking to you.
