WELLS - A CROP walk to raise money for impoverished people around the world is scheduled for Oct. 14, a news release said.
The walk will be held in town starting and ending at the Wells United Methodist Church on Main Street. Those who are able will walk around Lake Algonquin (three and one half miles) but shorter distances can be walked.
Registration will begin at 1 p.m. at the church, with the walk starting at 1:30 p.m. There will be water and rest stops along the route with refreshments at the church after the walk, the release said.
The walk will be hosted by the area churches in Wells, Speculator, Lake Pleasant and Piseco. Walkers should sign-up sponsors and can receive donation envelopes at any of the local churches. Twenty-five percent of the funds raised will be returned to food pantries in the area, with the rest used to support self-help development programs, meet emergency needs, and help address the root causes of poverty around the world, the release said.
CROP is an acronym for "Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty," the release said. CROP is part of the Church World Service that sponsors such walks across the nation.
