Smith sets district record

FORT PLAIN - Bailey Smith, a seventh-grader at Canajoharie Middle School and a resident of Fort Plain, broke the Adirondack Zone district and resident record in the 200-meter butterfly this summer clocking a time of 2:33.68.

Smith's mark knocked 9 seconds off of the old record, which was set in 2006.

The Adirondack zone covers much of eastern New York and Vermont.

Smith broke the record at the Adirondack championship meet at Colgate University in Hamilton, swimming 2:36.81 and then broke her own record three weeks later at the Eastern Zones Championships in Richmond, Va. Smith finished fourth in the finals at the meet, which took place Aug. 7 to 11.

The Eastern Zone Swimming Championships involves swimmers from Maine to Virginia.

Smith swims for the Schenectady Saratoga Sharks Swim Club and is coached by Jerry Adams.
