FORT JOHNSON-Montgomery County sheriff's deputies said a man who was arrested Tuesday tried to take a deputy's pistol.
Jeffrey Opalka Jr., 24, of 6 Prospect St., was charged with two counts of fourth-degree grand larceny, three counts of fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, two counts of petit larceny, and one count each of third-degree attempted robbery, second-degree obstruction of governmental administration, resisting arrest, and fifth-degree conspiracy.
Deputies said they received calls about a man breaking into vehicles on Route 30 in the town of Amsterdam and stealing items from them. Deputies said during the investigation, they found Opalka in the basement of a nearby home. Opalka had several items that were reported stolen, deputies said. The residence also contained property stolen from other incidents reported several days earlier, deputies said.
Opalka was taken into custody to the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies said while being processed, Opalka attempted to take a deputy's service pistol from the holster. The deputy had to struggle with the suspect, deputies said.
