Racing Around: Fonda to return to action

September 13, 2012
By JAMES A. ELLIS ( , The Leader Herald

While the season has ended at The Ridge, racing returns Saturday at Fonda Speedway.

All divisions will be in action at Fonda with the added attraction of the CRSA 305 sprint cars. The program will start with at the traditional Saturday night time of 7 p.m.

The Track of Champions will close out the 2012 season next weekend with its traditional two-day racing extravaganza.

McDonald's is not on board this year, but I have been told there are special events planned as Fonda celebrates the final weekend of the 60th consecutive season of racing at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds. Some of the changes for the season finale is that the 100-lap modified feature on Sept. 23 will be a $12,000-to-win event and the heat races will be 12-laps for $1,200-to-win.

The 602 sportsman have been added to Sunday's program in a $1,200-to-win main event to go with $120-to-win in the heat races. The pro stocks also will be on the program in a $1,200-to-win main event. In the past, it was normally just the modifieds and pro stocks on the final day of racing.

The Sept. 22 program also has been upgraded.

The modifieds will go 40-laps for $4,000-to-win, while the 602 sportsmen will go for $500-to-win.

There should be a large turnout for the street stock division, as they will battle for $500-to-win, $400 for second, $300 for third, $200 for fourth and $100 for a top-five finish.

The 4-cylinders will go for $300-to-win, $200 for second and $100 for third.

The ESS sprint cars also are on the Saturday program for their championship finale. The battle for the ESS series championship is tight heading into the finale.

Lance Yonge leads Chuck "Cobra" Hebing by three points, 1,631-1,628 heading to Fonda. The teams are scheduled to race at Ohsweken Speedway in Ontario, Canada, in a two-day championship event this weekend, but only show-up points will be awarded.

Palmer's Service is also giving away back-to-school backpacks and bikes during Saturday's program.

Fonda Speedway Museum

Fans attending the annual Fonda Fair this year probably noticed the building with the vintage modifieds of Lou Lazzaro, Jack Johnson and Bruce Dostal on display.

Speedway promoter Ric Lucia said it will be the new home of the Fonda Speedway Museum.

Previously, the speedway memorabilia was displayed at the Fultonville McDonald's on Riverside Drive.

The annual Fonda Speedway Yearbooks published by The Leader-Herald will be available this weekend at the speedway.

The books are packed with roundups of all the races from the 2012 season, action photos and driver portraits.

Not to be biased, but for $2, it is a bargain.

Most Popular Drivers

During Sept. 22 race program, The Leader-Herald will present the annual Fonda Speedway Most Popular Driver plaques to the winners of the fan-voted award.

Winners this year are Ryan Odasz (modified), Mark Mortensen (602 sportsman), Pete Broderson (pro stock), Greg Havlicek (street stock) and Ben Righi (4-cylinder).

Congratulations to all the drivers and a thank you to all the fans that took the time to vote.
