On behalf of the Elizabeth Cady Stanton Women's Consortium, I would like to thank all who participated in our Women's Equality Day celebration events Aug. 24. We enjoyed a full day, including events sponsored by the Elizabeth Cady Stanton Hometown Association such as guided walking tours, a luncheon and the inauguration of their cellphone tour "Walk in the Footsteps of Elizabeth Cady Stanton." Be sure to take advantage of this wonderful tour - the first sign is adjacent to the tourist information booth across from the Bank of America in downtown Johnstown. In the evening, the Women's Consortium sponsored "Equality Day in the Park" featuring an ice cream social, Bob and the Bobcats and a "flash mob" play "Failure Is Impossible" with 23 different members and other community residents taking part.
All of the various events were well received and attended, and we thank those who took time to celebrate the momentous occasion of the 92nd anniversary of women attaining the right to vote. This was a long, conscientious struggle on the part of many suffragists - most notably Johnstown's very own Elizabeth Cady Stanton.
We would like to encourage all women of voting age to honor the efforts of our suffragist sisters by exercising their right to vote in the upcoming - and every - election.
