GLOVERSVILLE- Police said this morning the bear seen on East Ninth Avenue Sunday afternoon climbed down from a tree and left.
Gloversville Police Chief Donald VanDeusen said the decision was made Sunday night to give the black bear - caught in a tree behind a doctor's office - space and limit the distractions in the area. After that, the bear climbed down and ran off.
Reports of a bear being seen on East Eighth Avenue on Sunday reached Gloversville Police at noon. When they responded, the bear climbed a tree, in a East Ninth Avenue backyard. Police closed off access to the street to all non-residents.
VanDeusen said there were no other reports of bear sightings in the area.
"It is very rare we get sightings of bears in the city," VanDeusen said.
