John P. Deitch of Johnstown, died Monday, August 20, 2012. He was born February 2, 1919, in Bronx, N.Y., the son of John P. Deitch Sr. and Mary Amelia Deitch.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Doris T. Deitch; two sons, Jon Richard (Nancy) Deitch and Gregory (Nancy) Deitch; two sisters, Muriel Deitch and Dorothy Deitch; one brother, Stratford Deitch (Barbara); three stepgranddaughters, Shannon Thomarie (Dylan), Kelly Gore and Meagan Hottells (Billy); and two stepgreat-grandaughters, Lyra and Brynn Thomarie.
He was a Master Gardner and served 20 years as a volunteer at Cooperative Extension of Cornell University. He also served as a volunteer for the Dale Carnegie classes.
John was a member of the Pedal Steel Guitar Association for 56 years, a board member and attended many of their presentations over the years.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Johnstown and served as an Elder for six years. He was the president of Domestic Leather Corp. until his retirement at age 80.
He served four years in the Army Air Corps during WW II as a sergeant servicing B17s and B29s.
There will be a memorial service at the First Presbyterian Church, Johnstown at a date to be announced.; also a military service at Saratoga National Cemetery, Saratoga, N.Y. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, 108 Steele Ave., Gloversville, N.Y.
