CANAJOHARIE - The village will accept the deed to the old West Hill School and turn the building over to a group that plans to renovate it, village Mayor Francis Avery said.
Avery said the village is waiting for Montgomery County to hand the deed over to the village. The county, which foreclosed on the old school because of nonpayment of taxes, has agreed to give the building to the village.
Francis said the building will be turned over to the Historic West Hill Committee, which will repair the building, but the committee will have to meet certain requirements. For example, the group would have to meet a timeline for fixing the roof, Avery said. If the group fails to adhere to the conditions, the village would have the right to retake the building.
The Historic West Hill Committee, a group of local residents, wants to save the old building because of its historic value. The former school was built on the site of the Canajoharie Academy where Susan B. Anthony, a women's rights activist, worked for two years.
Members of the committee have said the building needs roof work, a new staircase, heating system and more than 130 new windows.
Avery did not know the time frame for the deed transaction.
