Harvey W. VanValkenburgh, 70, of Johnstown, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, July 31, 2012 at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady.
He was born on March 1, 1942 in Gloversville NY and was a lifelong resident of Johnstown. He was a son of the late Lewis H. and Anna P. (Berry) VanValkenburgh. Harvey was a 1961 graduate of Oppenheim-Ephratah Central School. He was an alumnist of SUNY Morrisville where he received an Applied Associates Degree in Agricultural Sciences.
Harvey started a career with the AGWAY company in 1961 and was a Regional Sales Manager before leaving to purchase his own store in Amsterdam in 1987. Harvey married his beloved wife on July 8, 1967. Harvey and Kathy then purchased their second store, Johnstown Agway which he later expanded to include Home Heating Headquarters and became the number one Harman Stove Dealer in New York State.
Harvey was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Past President, Chief and Honorary Member of the Sammonsville Volunteer Fire Department, Past President and current member of the Sprite Club, Royal Mountain Moonlighters, and Oppenheim Trailblazers. He belonged to Duck Unlimited and the National Rifle Association. Harvey was also a Past President and Board Member of the Northeast Hearth Patio and Barbecue Association.
Harvey's biggest pride and joy came from being with his children, grandchildren, extended family and friends. Harvey was and avid Hunter and fisherman and enjoyed yearly trips with his sons, grandsons and brother. Harvey also enjoyed spending his summers at their camp in East Caroga Lake where he loved to barbecue, ride his pontoon boat and spend time with his faithful canine Dolly.
Harvey is survived by his wife of 45 years Kathleen Marie (Fritz); his sons Matthew (Richelle), Michael (Christine), Mark (Christina), and Henry Fountain, a daughter Missy (Terry) Bills, a brother Russell
(Carolyn) of Raleigh, N.C., a sister-in-law Linda (Lewis, Jr.) of St. Johnsville; 10 grandchildren Matthew (MJ), Haylee, Breanna, Casey, Hope, Jake, Abby, Joshua, Hannah, and Rhyleigh and several nieces,
nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother Lewis, Jr.
Funeral services will be conducted on Monday, August 6th at 10:00 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church, Johnstown, NY.
Friends and family may call on Sunday, August 5th from 4 to 7 p.m. at the A.G. Cole Funeral Home, Inc., 215 E. Main Street, Johnstown.
