Ross R. ‘Dick’ Crankshaw

Ross R. "Dick" Crankshaw of Middle Grove Road, Middle Grove, died early Monday morning, (July 23, 2012) at his home following a courageous battle with lung cancer. He was 71.

Born on March 14, 1941, in Gloversville, N.Y., he was the son of William and Almedia M. (Cole) Crankshaw.

Dick grew up in Johnstown and was a graduate of Johnstown High School.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1957-1959.

In the earlier years, he worked at Johnstown Knitting Mill and then at General Electric Company in Schenectady. Dick retired after 28 years of service from Price Chopper's Ballston Avenue store in Saratoga Springs where he worked as a meat cutter, assistant meat manager and then meat manager.

Dick enjoyed working outdoors and gardening. He was an avid New York Giants and New York Mets fan. He loved to travel and enjoyed trips with his wife Donna to the ocean.

Dick was a Little League coach in Johnstown for many years. He also played softball in Gloversville and bowled on a bowling league in Gloversville and Glens Falls. He took great joy in cheering for his children and grandchildren over the years in the various sports and events.

He is predeceased by a grandson, Nicholas Clute.

He leaves his loving wife of 20 years, Donna M. (Walrath) Crankshaw of Middle Grove; son, Richard Crankshaw (Ying) of Brooklyn; two daughters, Teresa Hayner (Eric) of Caroga Lake, N.Y. and Louise Clute (Carl) of Johnstown, N.Y.; stepson, Michael Mathusa (Lee Barbato) of Gansevoort, N.Y.; stepdaughter, Amy Sgueglia (John) of Columbus, Ohio; grandsons, Joshua, Joseph, Aarron and Brendon Hayner, Adam and Benjamin Clute, Zaccaria, Jacob Crankshaw and Alex Sgueglia; and special granddaughter, Adrianna Mathusa; five great-grandchildren; father-in-law, Donald Walrath; and a special sister-in-law, Betty Walrath; three brothers, William Crankshaw (Gayle) of Perth, N.Y., George Crankshaw (Marilyn) of Johnstown, N.Y., and Charles Crankshaw (Patricia) of Perth, N.Y.; three sisters, Sandra Vouga of Gloversville, N.Y., Maryann Schaver (Ray) of Perth, N.Y., and Donna Mussey (Rick) of Meco, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.

At Dick's request, there will be no calling hours and all services will be private at convenience of the family.

Burial will be at Middle Grove Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in honor of Dick to St. Jude Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
