Mary A. Sgroi

Mary A. Sgroi, 97, formerly of Roberts Street, Deppoliti Avenue, and later Stoneleigh Apartments, Canastota, died Sunday, July 1, 2012, in the Fulton Center, Gloversville, where she had resided for the past few years.

Born in Canastota, on March 14, 1915, she was the daughter of Antonio and Giuseppine Raite Sorbello. A lifelong resident of Canastota, Mary was educated in Canastota schools. She married Joseph S. Sgroi in St. Agatha's Church on February 3, 1940. Mr. Sgroi died on May 4, 1993.

For many years, prior to her retirement, Mary was employed with the Queensboro Dairy Products Inc. of Canastota, as a secretary. She also assisted her late husband in the operation of the family farm. Mrs. Sgroi was a communicant of St. Agatha's Church and a member of the Altar-Rosary Society. She enjoyed baking, cooking, crocheting, playing golf and cards and spending time with her family.

She is survived by two daughters and two sons-in-law, Christine and Paul Martin of Rochester, Nancy Krawczeski of Gloversville and Mark Waterman of Utica; one son and daughter-in-law, Samuel J. and Sylvia Sgroi of Waterford, Wisconsin; one sister, Katherine Bennati of Syracuse; one brother and sister-in-law, George and Josephine Sorbello of Chelmsford, Massachusetts; ten grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter, Josephine Waterman on September 1, 2009; a granddaughter, Lori Martin in 1992; and son-in-law, Daniel Krawczeski in 1993.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Friday from the Campbell-Dean Funeral Home Inc., 300 S. Peterboro Street, Canastota, and 10:30 a.m. from St. Agatha's Church, where the Funeral Mass will be celebrated by the Reverend William Mesmer. Interment will be made in St. Agatha's Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home, 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday. Contributions, in her memory, may be made to St. Agatha's Bereavement Committee, 329 N. Peterboro Street, Canastota, NY 13032 or the Fulton Center Resident Activities Fund, 847 County Highway 122, Gloversville, NY 12078. Envelopes for these funds may be obtained at the funeral home.
