The Leader Herald

Joseph J. and Joyce Walsh celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary June 28. A celebration party took place June 30, hosted by their daughter and her husband, Patricia and Bob Allen, in Poughkeepsie, Dutchess County. Their four other children also attended. They are: Susan Armstrong (Michael) of Gansevoort, Saratoga County, Kathleen Paterno (Philip) of Powell Butte, Ore., Sally Comstock (Ronald) of Clifton Park, Saratoga County, and Donald Walsh (Katherine) of Ballston Lake, Saratoga County; as well as many of their 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Both Joe and Joyce Walsh attended school in Johnstown and were going together during junior high school. At the age of 20, before enlisting in the Navy, Joe proposed to the former Joyce Barney, then 19. The couple married on June 28, 1947, at the home of her parents, Burton Ellis and Ella Barney on the Gloversville-Caroga Lake Road and were attended by family and friends including Joe Walsh's parents, Joseph and Ethel Walsh of Irving Street, Johnstown.

In 1962, the Walsh family moved from Johnstown to Glenville, where Joe Walsh became a State Farm Insurance agent and Joyce Walsh raised their family. During these years, they were members of the Glenville Fire Department and the Shriners Band.

Joe Walsh retired in 1989, and they moved to Springhill, Fla., where they made their winter home. They continued to come back each summer to their residence on Sacandaga Lake, where they have get-togethers for family and friends. For more than 30 years, Joe Walsh conducted the Johnstown Citizens Band each Friday night.

In Springhill, Joseph and Joyce are both active members of the First United Methodist Church, where Joe is often called upon to be the church organist. Joyce helps with the church's weekly bulletin and monthly newsletter. She also volunteers her time at the church library. Both have been members of the United Methodist Choir for many years.
