The Shepard Memorial Scholarship from The Trackside Association of Johnstown has decided to award a yearly scholarship of $300 to start with, and may provide more as time goes on. The award is for a hard-working senior who has applied himself/herself and overcome hardship. In other words, this scholarship is not for straight A/B students, who belong to several clubs, have several letters and are in the upper 10 percent of their graduating class. This scholarship is for the 1 percent, a survivor from a broken home, dysfunctional parents, a bad situation and who is tenaciously just staying in school, maintaining an acceptable average, who works due to a definite necessity and really needs the help that a few hundred dollars will provide.
At this time, if you are interested in contributing to this senior, who really needs the help, please contact John L. Chrisman, president of Trackside Association, at 705-4111. I will happily read callers her winning essay.
I've spoken with her guidance counselor and checked on a couple of other facts. Life is real tough and everyone deserves a break, especially people overcoming the odds against them who wish to become real citizens and contribute to the world.
