I would like to go on record as strongly disagreeing with the Gloversville Enlarged School District Board of Education's decision to discontinue the residency requirement for our superintendent of schools.
It is my opinion that any person who has the authority to make decisions that could affect the local tax rate should have to live with the consequences of those decisions on a personal level - by that, I mean living in the community and actually paying those taxes him or herself. It's very easy to enact policies that will raise taxes when, at the end of the day, your own taxes remain the same.
What's done is done, and I wish Mr. Vanyo the best of luck in his new position. I just hope he considers the economic reality of this area and, in particular, the tax-strapped citizens of Gloversville when he starts setting his policies.
