Kudos to the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York for bringing the Summer Food Service Program to Gloversville. According to the United States Department of Agriculture website, approximately 21 million students utilize the free- and reduced-lunch program during the school year, but only 2.3 million children take advantage of summer feeding sites across the country.
This statistic is alarming. It appears many children may be going hungry during the summer months. Families who participate in the school meal program are stretched to feed their families three meals a day during the summer. Feeding sites provide free, nutritious meals for children in our communities to help relieve some of this stress.
