The Leader Herald

Gertrude P. Gallup, 85, formerly of Lawrence Street, Gloversville, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 17, 2012, after a long battle with Huntington's Disease.

Gert will be remembered lovingly for having a kind and gentle soul and for the love of her family and friends; especially her childhood friend and sister-in-law, Catherine Lee.

On the onset of Gert's illness, her caregivers were her granddaughter, Jenna; her daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Steven Wrabel, whom she resided with.

Gert's family would like to thank the third floor nursing staff at Nathan Littauer Hospital as well as the staff at Mountain Valley Hospice for their compassion, kindness, and love shown to their mother and grandmother.

Gertrude was born on September 26, 1926, to the late Robert E. and Martha Van Buren Lee. She worked at J.J. Newberry's and other department stores in the area. Later Gertrude worked in the glove industry until her retirement in 1989 from Grandoe Co. After her retirement, her years were filled with visiting and caring for her grandchildren.

She was an avid New York Mets fan and her best experience was when she was given a private tour of the Mets Medical Facilities and prime seating behind home plate watching Mike Piazza as a catcher; and was given this opportunity when she was injured while attending a home game. Gert enjoyed crocheting, sewing, canning, playing cards, taking rides and going out for ice cream.

Gert is survived by her children, Thomas R. Quackenbush (Cookie) of Gloversville, John Quackenbush (Rohini) of Northport, Long Island, Susan (Steven) Wrabel and Joanne (Dennis) Hinman, both of Gloversville; and stepdaughter, Donna Gallup; also her grandchildren, Cindy, Melissa, Josh, Nate, Jenna, Chad, Seth, VJ, Sandyia, AJ, Stacia, Amanda and Alyssa; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Also surviving are her brothers, Richard (Peggy) Lee of Gloversville and Raymond H. (Dolores) Lee of Florida.

Gertrude was predeceased by her first husband, Edward Smida, whom she married in 1944 and he lost his life in WW II; Thomas Quackenbush, who was the father of her children; Donald Gallup; her siblings, Walter and Robert H. Lee Jr., Nina Lee and Doris Hynd.

Friends may call today, June 19, 2012, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Amico Funeral Home, 150 South Main St., Gloversville, where funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 20, 2012, at noon. Interment will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, 108 Steele Ave., Gloversville, NY 12078.
