GLOVERSVILLE - City police today said a man whose body was found Sunday near Prospect Hill Cemetery died after he suffered a heart attack in his bedroom and fell out a second-floor window, hit a porch roof and tumbled to the sidewalk below.
A police news release issued today identified the deceased man as Calvin Beekman, 80, of 34 Thompson Ave. Police said initial reports of the man being wrapped in a blanket were false.
"While he was in his bed in the early morning hours, he suffered a heart attack," Capt. Anthony Clay said today. "He was near his window, fell out the window and slid down to the sidewalk."
The release said officers responded Sunday to find Beekman wearing a bathrobe on the sidewalk in front of his home. Police said officers found Beekman suffered "numerous injuries about his body."
The release said officers tried to contact other occupants of 34 Thompson Ave. and forced their way in after not being able to contact anyone.
Police said a check of the residence showed a disturbed area near an open window. After ensuring there were no other injured people or anyone posing a threat, officers secured the scene until detectives could process the scene for evidence.
Police worked with Fulton County Coroner Art Simmons and members of the Ambulance Service of Fulton County and city Fire Department at the scene. Police said a family member in distress also was treated.
On Monday, Dr. Michael Sikirica conducted an autopsy of Beekman and the circumstances of his death were revealed.
"All of the injuries Mr. Beekman sustained were consistent with the fall and there is no indication of foul play," Clay said.
