Salvatore Lomanto, 91, of Gloversville, died Monday, June 4, 2012, at River Ridge Living Center in Amsterdam. Born in Gloversville on April 16, 1921, he was the son of the late Rosario and Maria DeRocco Lomanto.
Salvatore graduated from Gloversville High School in 1939 and was a member of the undefeated football team. He served in the United States Army in the African and Italian campaigns and was awarded a Purple Heart for injuries sustained during service.
He was initially the owner of R. Lomanto & Sons Produce Market in Gloversville and later retired as a John Hancock Life Insurance agent.
He was married to Betty Perrone Lomanto on April 17, 1949; she predeceased him on July 28, 2011.
Survivors include his grandchildren, Donald Lomanto, Lynn Gillen, Beth Vernold and Daniel Lomanto; as well as his daughter-in-law, Ann Lomanto.
Salvatore is also survived by his sisters and brothers, Concetta Salluzzo, Mary Jane Lomanto, attorney Edward S. Lomanto and Judge Angelo D. Lomanto. He was predeceased by his son, Dr. Donald S. Lomanto; a sister, Frances Spencer; and brothers, James V. Lomanto and Joseph Lomanto.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 6, 2012, at the Church of the Holy Spirit, 149 S. Main St., Gloversville. In accordance with Mr. Lomanto's wishes, there will be no calling hours. Burial will be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Johnstown.
