MINDEN - An unidentified motorist was killed Friday night when his truck ran off Route 80 into a ditch and caught fire.

Fort Plain Fire Chief Brian Muheleck said his department received the call at 11:16 p.m. Friday. He said the man was driving north on Route 80 between Lighthall Road and the Herkimer County line when the truck went off the road and into the ditch and caught fire.

Montgomery County Coroner Susan Quackenbush pronounced the victim dead at the scene.

The name of the victim has not been released, pending positive identification and notification of next of kin, Muheleck said.

The cause of the fire is not known, and the investigation continues, Muheleck said.

Fort Plain firefighters, Montgomery County sheriff's deputies and members of the New York State Police and Mid-County Ambulance Corps responded to the accident.
