JOHNSTOWN - Second place never felt so good for Fonda-Fultonville's Lindsay Therrien, and her coach - and father - Mark Therrien.
After finishing her Division II 100-meter high hurdle event, Lindsay ran into the infield, hugged teammate Guilyan O'Kosky, before running over to hug her dad.
Her reaction was as if she just won the event, which would've automatically qualified her for next week's New York State Track and Field Championships at Cicero-North Syracuse High?School.

But Lindsay's second-place finish (16.26) in the 100-meter hurdles was good enough to qualify, because she hit the state qualifying time earlier this year, meaning she only had to finish in second place - which, in this case, was just as good as first place.
"We're proud of her," coach Therrien said. "Naturally, a little more cause I'm her dad. So it was nice to see her run well and get a big 'ole hug afterwards. I don't get to do that very often. I kind of keep my coaching boundary there, but today I let it go."
Therrien was a proud coach and parent on this last day of the state qualifying meet at Knox Field in Johnstown. Not only did his daughter qualify, but so did Fonda-Fultonville's Sarah Wyzomirski in the Div. II shot put, and the 4x800-meter relay team of Cameron Gilligan, Tyler Angioli, Matt Hoffman and Michael Scott.
"We're very happy," coach Therrien said. "We pretty much have every base covered. We have a runner going, we have a thrower going and we have a relay going. So we can't complain."
In the 4x800 relay, Fonda-Fultonville trailed early as the baton hand-off between Gilligan and Angioli was cluttered by hand-offs from of some of the other 11-teams in the race.
The Braves at one point were in eighth-place in to Angioli's turn, but one-by-one, Angioli and Hoffman picked off the small school teams they needed to beat before Scott closed the race for the Division II win.
Actually, by the time the race was over, the Braves picked off most of the large schools too, finishing third overall.
The Braves were the best Division II team by 12 seconds, with a time of 8:11.47.
"Those boys at the end are some of our best runners," Fonda-Fultonville distance coach Mike Benton said. "We were going to win doing our best or lose doing our best, and these boys pulled it through. I'm very happy."
So is the relay team.
Hoffman, who finished fourth (4:22.02) in the 1,600-meter run, said the 4x800 team has been cursed lately in not being able to get to states, but now they've finally gotten there.
A 4x800 Fonda-Fultonville relay team has won two state titles - in 2005 and 2006. In 2005, states took place at Cicero-North Syracuse, where this relay team races next week.
Wyzomirski's shot put throw of 36 4-0 was good enough to punch her ticket. It's the senior's first time going to states and she said she wanted to leave her senior year with a bang.
"Usually I'm never nervous for track meets or anything, but it's my senior year, and I just wanted to go out with something good," she said. "Going to states is a really big accomplishment."
Other local winners who punched their tickets to states on the day were Gloversville's Liz Hogan in the Div. I shot put, Canajoharie's Mariah Pettit in the Div. II 100-meter dash, and Amsterdam's Matt White in the Div. I pentathlon.
Hogan made her first throw of 36 04-1/4 count the most as none of the other competitors in the Div. I field were able to top that mark.
Shaker's Chelia Diao came close with a throw of 36 02-1/2, but no one was able to beat Hogan's first.
"I honestly didn't think it would hold," Hogan said. "I was nervous, but determined. I thought I would throw it farther."
This is the second time Hogan has gone to states in the shot put this year. The senior went to the indoor state championships this year at Cornell University.
"I won't be as nervous this time," said Hogan, who finished eighth in the indoor meet.
White said on Thursday he would be nervous coming into his last event of the pentathlon, the 1,500-meter run, despite his hefty lead going in.
The senior led by more than 500 points going into the long run, which he could've strolled across the finish line with such a large lead. Instead, White, more of a sprinter than a long distance runner, sprinted the final 300-meters to finish with a time of 4:50. That mark sent the Rams coaching staff into more jubilation than White, who officially won the pentathlon after the event.
"I didn't feel like I was going to make it midway through the race," White said. "Then in the last 400, I kind of got an energy shot, especially in the last 300 - I put everything I had into it."
His mark of 4:50 is 19-seconds better than his 5:09 time he ran in the 1,500 at the Fonda Pentathlon and Steeplechase Meet in April, the first meet of the year.
One more week of improvement and Amsterdam coach Stu Palczak said he's got a good chance for another win next Saturday.
"He's on the podium," he said. "And can certainly be in the mix to win it. It's within reach."
Like Lindsay Therrien, Pettit was the happiest athlete in the infield when she found out her second place finish earned her a trip to states.
The freshman won her heat, then finished second in the finals with a time of 13.11. She earned her spot by hitting the qualifying mark at the Section II Class C meet then finishing second at the state qualifying meet.
Coming into the final heat, Pettit was seeded-fifth out of six runners, but out ran three of them to earn her spot.
"I felt really fast," said Pettit, who also finished third (26.67) in the 200-meter.
Canajoharie girls coach Ellee Fichthorn said it was a pleasant surprise.
"It was going to be a long shot, but it happened," she said.
Lindsay Therrien and Pettit were some of the few who qualified by coming in second place, but others weren't as fortunate.
Mayfield/Northville's Jessica Glode took second (2,232) in the Division II pentathlon, but was Glode still excited about her second place finish.
Other top-six finishers on the day included Gloversville's Chanel Thomas taking fourth (16.09) in the Div. 1 100-meters and was part of Gloversville's 4x100-meter relay team that placed fifth (51.34).
Canajoharie's Seth Ferguson took fourth (16.34) and Fonda-Fultonville's Michael Sweet finished fifth (16.38) in the 110-meter hurdles, Fonda-Fultonville's Kim Geniti took fifth in the 1,500 (4:59.17), Camryn Savoie took third (102-07) in the discus with Fort Plain's Amanda Busch taking sixth (93-03) in the same event. Broadalbin-Perth's Justin Ferguson held the lead for a little bit in the Div. II steeplechase, but wound up finishing third (9:54.11) with teammate Opal Jessica Bogdan placing third (7:42.62) in the girls 2,000 steeplechase.
In the relays, the Amsterdam boys 4x800 team took fourth (8:21.48), the Broadalbin-Perth boys 4x400 took third (3:30.64), while Canajoharie's girls 4x400 relay team, which features three freshman (Pettit, Jordyn Logan, Ariannah Logan) and a sophomore (Becca Custer) took third (4:17.38).
