Discourage vandalism, thefts at beach

May 25, 2012
The Leader Herald

To the taxpayers of Mayfield:

I am a lifelong resident of Mayfield and I am also on the beach committee for the Mayfield Town Beach. It has been an issue lately that the beach and its premises have been vandalized and robbed of town beach property. The gate itself has been damaged, the gate lock has been deemed unusable, the storage sheds have been broken into, signs and boats stolen, and dirt bikes have torn up the beach.

Many people volunteered their time to make this beach happen along with many regulations that these volunteers had to overcome to make this beach happen. It takes a crew of many hard- working people to get the beach ready for the summer season, and it is being destroyed by inconsiderate people.

It becomes a huge issue when the gate lock is damaged because the state police and local EMS have access to the beach for boating-accident and launch purposes.

With municipalities in dire straits, the town does not have the extra working money to be replacing such things as boats and locks, and making gate repairs, etc. to continue having the beach open.

So, please be advised that this is going on with your hard-earned tax dollars, and please help to discourage such activity.

If you see such activity, please contact local authorities as soon as you see it happen. We want to keep this beach open for our residents, but if this activity continues, it is going to be hard to keep it open.
