MAYFIELD - Four people were injured Sunday in a two-vehicle crash caused by a driver falling asleep, according to Fulton County sheriff's deputies.

The accident occurred at 12:22 a.m. on Route 30, north of Dennie Loop Road.

Deputies said driver Elijah J. Shumaker Jr., 17, of 273 White Birch Road, Northville, suffered an arm injury. His passenger, Beth Dutcher, 15, suffered a facial injury.

Deputies said the other driver, Frank M. Valachovic, 64, of 201 Schmerhorn St., Schenectady, complained of a back injury.

His passenger, Joan Roveland, whose age was unavailable, suffered a facial injury, deputies said.

All four were taken to Nathan Littauer Hospital in Gloversville.

Deputies said Shumaker was southbound on Route 30 and he fell asleep at the wheel. His car crossed the center line and struck Valachovic's pickup truck, deputies said.

Shumaker was ticketed on a charge of failure to keep right.
