CHEERS - To kids playing. On Thursday, the winter of 2012 made an appearance. The kids had a snow day and there were numerous sightings of them actually playing in the snow. Yes, a phenomenal observation of kids putting down cellphones, getting up from computers and going outside. Fresh air, exercise, imaginations in full throttle, the whole works, and in some cases, parents and older teens were captured in newspaper photos and Facebook postings actually enjoying the activity right alongside each other. It felt good to witness people out in their neighborhoods.
JEERS - To paying. The resignation of the Wheelerville Union Free School District superintendent includes a request for personal leave. The resignation, announced this week, was effective last Monday, and the board will talk about it at a March 19 meeting. If agreed to, the superintendent/principal would be paid, apparently in full, until June 30. Unless the Board of Education can convince taxpayers that there is an acceptable, legitimate reason for the request of a paid leave of absence, then the resignation should have been effective Feb. 27 - period.
CHEERS -?To new blood. Gloversville once again has appointed individuals to a Recreation Commission. Seven residents have willingly stepped up to serve the community. We want to applaud their volunteering and start them out with a chorus of enthusiasm. There already are thoughts of a part-time director to oversee youth activities. We offer a word of caution: Please don't let history repeat itself. In 2008, the city planned to hire a director. After interviewing a number of candidates, officials discovered a civil service exam may be needed and a job description may have to be sent to the state. Was a determination made? In addition, we expect this commission will be given a complete and accurate accounting of the money it has available.
