Task Force reports on Wheels program

The Wheels transportation service consists of two programs:

Volunteer drivers, using their own vehicles, who are available to take seniors to medical appointments.

The Wheels bus, transporting seniors to social and cultural events, which will be scheduled twice a month on Wednesdays. Upcoming trips will be published in the Sacandaga Express, The Edinburg Newsletter, The Leader-Herald, and the Hamilton County News. Announcements will also be made at meetings of the Sacandaga Seniors, the Wells Seniors and at the Red Rooster Cafe.

The service began when the Sacandaga Task Force for Senior Living put out a call asking for volunteer drivers to take seniors to medical appointments.

Last fall, the group was given a mini-bus to use for senior transportation to social and cultural events. The committee named the bus and the transportation project Wheels, and started showing it off at area senior meetings.

So far, the committee has focused on the communities of Northville, Edinburg and Wells, a news release said.

The first trip involved taking seniors Christmas shopping in?Amsterdam. After the holidays, a trip to Saratoga was organized. This month, a trip was planned to a Nathan Littauer HealthLink program.

Norma Porteus has been on both bus trips and had a volunteer drive her to a doctor's appointment.

When asked about the Wheels program, Porteus replied, "It's great fun! I love to get out but would rather not drive. Now I can go places and enjoy people without worrying about traffic or road conditions. And, having someone pick me up for a medical appointment is a blessing."

There is a suggested donation for these services, but people who are unable to contribute are still welcome.

To schedule a driver for an appointment or to reserve a seat on the bus, call 863-4040, Ext. 42. Leave a name and phone number and someone will call back with the details. People interested in becoming a volunteer driver also can call.
