Housing grants awarded

February 12, 2012
By JOHN R. BECKER , The Leader Herald

The Gloversville, Amsterdam and St. Johnsville municipal housing authorities will receive grants from the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The Gloversville Housing Authority will receive $341,929, the Amsterdam Housing Authority $316,764 and the St. Johnsville Housing Authority $47,821. The grants are part of $321 million awarded to 84 municipal housing authorities in New York and $1.8 billion awarded nationwide through HUD's Capital Fund Program, which provides annual funding to public housing authorities to build, repair, renovate or modernize their housing units, according to a statement from HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan. The money can be used to make large-scale improvements and energy-efficient upgrades, Donovan said.

The Gloversville Housing Authority operates three developments with a total of 293 apartments: Forest Hill Towers, Kingsboro Towers and Dubois Garden Apartments.

GHA Executive Director Daniel Towne said the grant money would be used for projects in the Forest Hill and Kingsboro developments.

"It's a special grant that housing authorities apply for every year," Towne said. "We plan to modernize the elevators and controllers in Forest Hill Towers and replace electric heater units in Kingsboro Towers, which were installed in the 1970s."

Towne estimated the cost of the Forest Hill Towers project at $90,000 and the Kingsboro Towers project at $110,000. The rest of the money will be used for administrative, architectural and engineering fees, he said.

Officials from the Amsterdam and St. Johnsville municipal housing authorities were not available for comment.
