JOHNSTOWN - A West State Street storage business has filed an application with the city Planning Board to add a third building to its business.
S&D Self Storage Units of 34 W. State St. wants to add another building to its two existing storage buildings, owner Shawn McCormick of Greenwich, Washington County, told the planning board at City Hall.
He said the third, 1,350-square-foot building will be about half with the width and 30 feet shorter than the existing two buildings.
The board approved itself as lead agency for the state Environmental Quality Review process required as part of the project. The board also scheduled a public hearing on the storage addition for 4 p.m. Oct. 4 at City Hall.
It was noted the new building has no code or setback issues. The new building will have the same appearance as the other buildings, and the only access will be on the left side of the building. The board asked McCormick about security at his business.
"It has a gate on it, but we don't close it," he said. "But we asked people to go during daylight hours."
McCormick said his business is illuminated at night and the hours will remain the same with the additional building.
He said the estimated $24,000 building project should take about two to three weeks to construct. He listed Ron Hinkle of Fonda as his contractor on his application to the board. McCormick said he is hoping to begin construction in either November or next spring.
The area of construction is near the Cayadutta Creek, and City Engineer Chad Kortz said a state flood plain development permit may be required.
Board Chairman Peter K. Smith said the board will probably take final action on the new building Oct. 4.
