APNewsBreak: New York City to issue municipal IDs

June 23, 2014
Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) — The New York City Council is set to vote to establish a municipal identification card that supporters say will help immigrants in the country illegally.

The measure will put the nation's largest city on a growing list of cities that issue municipal ID cards, including San Francisco and New Haven, Connecticut.

Democratic Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito tells The Associated Press the measure should pass in a vote Thursday.

The New York City Identity Card is for anyone who can establish identity and city residency.

Supporters say it'll be a significant help to immigrants who are in the U.S. illegally and can't obtain other identification. Critics say it'll allow benefits to those people.

The measure fulfills a campaign pledge made by Democratic Mayor Bill de Blasio (dih BLAH'-zee-oh). It's expected to go into effect this year.
