JOHNSTOWN - A snowmobile operator was hospitalized in critical condition Saturday night after he ran his machine head-on into a pickup truck, Fulton County sheriff's deputies said.
Deputies said John M. Lucas Jr., 42, of 285 W. State St. Ext., Gloversville, was taken to St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam after the 9:15 p.m. accident on Route 29, west of County Highway 131. He had severe bleeding to his body and later was taken to Albany Medical Center Hospital, authorities said.
Deputies said Lucas was driving a snowmobile east on Route 29 and crossed a yellow line. The snowmobile struck a pickup truck operated by Nellis F. Duesler, 70, of 126 Church Road, Johnstown, who was traveling west on Route 29. Deputies said the snowmobile then struck a snowbank on the north shoulder.
Deputies said Lucas will be charged at a later date with driving while intoxicated and driving a snowmobile on a highway.
