Mary Ann Watrobski Romeyn, 63, of the town of Broadalbin, N.Y., passed away on New Year's Day, January 1, 2011, at Albany Medical Center after injuries incurred from an accident on December 30, 2010. At her bedside were Tom and Heidi Hayes and Colleen and Cynthia McTammany.
She was born on May 15, 1947, at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam, the daughter of the late Stanley and Irene Watrobski. She graduated in 1965 from Galway Central School. She attended Stone Hill College in Massachusetts for nursing and also St. Mary's School of Nursing in Amsterdam. She also worked for NYS Taxation and Finance in Albany. She was the proprietor of Mary Ann's Restaurant and Catering for more than 40 years.
Mary Ann is survived by her loving husband, Merwyn Romeyn; her stepdaughter, Agnes Romeyn of Gloversville; and stepsons, George (Karen) Romeyn, Tom (Donna) Romeyn of Gloversville, John Romeyn of Dallas, Texas, Daniel (Jennifer) Romeyn and Darrin (Amy) Romeyn of Gloversville; also 8 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren. She also is survived by: siblings, Elaine (Thomas) Gasner of Perth, Cynthia (John) McTammany of Rochester, Stanley Watrobski of Hagaman and Kenneth (Kathy) Watrobski of California; along with nieces, Gayle (David) Botelho of Vermont and Colleen McTammany of Rochester; nephews, Peter Watrobski of Perth, Michael McTammany and Patrick (Brittany) McTammany of Rochester and Andrew Watrobski of California; a great-niece and several great-nephews. She also is survived by aunts, many cousins, good friends and the Mary Ann's Restaurant family. In addition to her parents, Mary Ann was predeceased by her stepsons, Merwyn Romeyn Jr. and Ronald Romeyn.
Mary Ann was an avid supporter of many organizations, especially the local volunteer fire departments. She Joined the Perth Volunteer Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary in 2009 and shortly after joined the Broadalbin Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary. Mary Ann was also a member of the St. Joseph's church Altar Rosary Society.
Her interests included ceramics, collecting Norman Rockwell memorabilia, playing cards, and entertaining friends with her many stories. Many encouraged her to write a book of her life experience as a restaurant proprietor. Her passion for cooking homemade food was well known throughout the tri-county area along with her desire to satisfy each of her customers. Mary Ann's yearly clambake was a fall highlight.
Funeral services will be held at 11:15 a.m. Wednesday (January 5, 2011) at the Amsterdam Funeral Chapel, 13 Belmont Place, Amsterdam, followed at noon by a Mass of Christian burial at St. Joseph's Church on Broadalbin. The Rev. Thomas Morette will officiate. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Amsterdam.
Calling hours will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Tuesday (January 4, 2011) at the funeral chapel.
