Former Rep. Giffords: Women can lead on gun laws

June 17, 2014
Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) — Former Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords says gun violence is a women's issue and women can lead the way in pushing for laws to stop it.

Giffords was shot in the head at a "Congress at your corner" event in Tucson in January 2011.

She resigned from Congress and has become a gun control advocate.

Giffords spoke Monday in New York City. Her husband, retired astronaut Mark Kelly, was by her side.

The Daily News of New York reports (http://nydn.us/1r0PjJQ ) that Giffords seemed much improved since her ABC News interview in November 2011.

Giffords gave one-word answers to Diane Sawyer then, but on Monday she read from a prepared speech and answered questions.

She said her schedule these days includes yoga, French horn, Spanish lessons and bike riding.
