Gertrude Cotton of the River Ridge Living Center, Amsterdam, celebrated her 100th birthday Tuesday with a birthday party with friends and family.
Cotton, the former Gertrude Wells, was born in Canajoharie, the fifth of nine girls in her family. Cotton was a first-grade teacher for 40 years in the Canajoharie school system, starting in a one-room schoolhouse on Seebers Lane.
She was married to the late Harold Cotton for 75 years and they lived in Fort Plain for many years. They were dog lovers who also enjoyed traveling, spending time in Canada and Virginia with their family. Reading has always been a passion of Cotton's and she continues to be an avid reader.
