Woman gets weekends in jail for swiping laptop

FONDA - An Amsterdam woman was sentenced to four months of weekends in jail in Montgomery County Court on Wednesday in connection with an Oct. 2009 incident in which she took someone's laptop out of a convenience store.

Mildred R. Jones, 44, of 153 Route 67, also received 5 years of probation and was ordered to pay a $375 surcharge and work 100 hours of community service.

Jones pleaded guilty to fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property on June 9.

The laptop belonged to an employee of a beverage distributor who was at the store.

In other court action Wednesday:

Gary P. Cohen, 51, of 57 Elizabeth St., Amsterdam, was sentenced to one year in jail and ordered to pay a $3,000 fine and $520 surcharge.

Cohen pleaded guilty to felony driving while intoxicated on June 8. He was charged in February in the city.

Michael Lemieux, 39, of 15 Valley Mobile Home Park, Chittenango, was sentenced to one to three years in state prison and ordered to pay a $2,000 fine and $520 surcharge.

Lemieux pleaded guilty on June 4 to felony driving while intoxicated after he was arrested on March 28 in the town of Florida.

John W. Smith, 30, of 24 Eagle St., Gloversville, was sentenced to one year in county jail and ordered to pay a $325 surcharge.

Smith pleaded guilty on May 17 to failure to register or verify address as a sex offender.

He was arrested in February after he moved to Gloversville from Montgomery County but failed to return an annual verification letter, Montgomery County sheriff's deputies said.
